B&B Science Park App

In the beginning of the pandemic (March 2020), all of us at SkyFox wanted to give a creative digital solution to the different challenges around CoVID 19. We chose a B2B focused solution for small-medium shops, as they were the businesses struggling the most.

The challenge

At that time the first idea was to do something to help to diagnose the virus, but that was a dead end without the collaboration with experts (later we got answers about this). So we tried to look from a more business-focused way that we could help. 

The aim was to help small-medium businesses that were struggling specifically with how to handle groups of people in the same space or handling long queues of customers, in order to better reduce one of the vectors that spread the virus and additionally to also keep the staff of the business as safe as possible.  

We decided to empower this business with a simple solution to handle queuing that only required a website and a device with internet connection (thus making it more affordable to smaller businesses).

Our goals

* Develop something in 2 months (not solely working on this) to provide an effective solution to this challenge.
* Creating a SaaS platform, delivering an MVP to our stakeholders.
* Deliver a platform that will create trust for the customers of our clients and a safe environment for the staff/customers, with the aim of generating deeper engagement and trust.

  My role

  My role was to analyze, maximize and expand the possibilities of this app as far as possible, always keeping in mind first the users and our clients needs, and then give a lean as possible solution to minimize the impact of the cost/time. 

  With multiple sessions of brainstorming and research about the topic as a team we started to work on how to land all of these ideas to start to develop it.

  Design the branding for this new project

  I was in charge of all the design of the product - we called it ‘The Bar’ - and the landing page to bring awareness to the project.

  It is worth mentioning that I had to be super careful about how to handle this project visually and emotionally for 2 contrasting reasons: the pandemic was causing a lot of understandable anxiety, and therefore I needed to find a way of engaging with the user in a way that countered this anxiety by providing a way to keep things calm. I did research on other solutions for the same kind of problem.

  I worked very closely with my manager and my lead developers to keep everything within the limits of our possibilities, since this was a side project for all of us.

  Q safe, not just another booking app.

  We already had the experience of a booking app project with B&B Science park that gave us an advantage of knowing how to handle the backend for this app - that was a very strong step forward for us in terms of how to handle the code, and also what kind of requirements we needed to cover in terms of screen requirements.

  As I mentioned before, part of the challenge was to be extra careful about the anxiety and panic around the pandemic and how to channel the right emotions for the user to access our platform, whilst at the same time being able to communicate the right amount of information about how our platform gives you the right way to handle the new dynamics of the pandemic to keep everyone safe.

  This project had multiple end users - the people queuing, and the businesses integrating our software. Whilst trying to think of how to delight our business customers, as part of this project I pitched the idea of offering different subscription tiers for the product - a free tier where you used our tool but with no customization, no rebranding etc, a premium tier with the functionality to changing branding to match your business, and lastly an enterprise tier where you could integrate directly into your software with no sign that you were using our platform. This went down very well with the business customers who wanted to have a greater control on the experience whilst still allowing us to reach a wider audience with the free tier, and was additionally an extra challenge for myself to have to tailor the designs in a way that could be easily rebranded and customized in a while label experience for our customers.

  Delivering a result:

  The action started with the branding, completely from scratch, and starting to figure out the structure and content for the website to bring investors and awareness about the project. Then, I started to experiment with the illustration style to help to simplify the topic.

  After that was done, I started to design the roadmap for The Bar process with the different variations depending on the subscription tier that you choose, and delivering and checking how to define the differences on the design. To implement The Bar you would need a minimum of a website and someone who can be in charge of receiving the customers, or a system for QR codes.

  The next part of the process would have been to start the admin interface part of the project where as a client you have the control over personalizing the interactions with the users and their times slots. Unfortunately the project was postponed because we got another project that was a bigger priority for the company at that moment and we couldn’t continue with this one. We had some interested clients but not enough to fund the rest of the project to justify carrying on with it.

In the context of the CoVID 19 pandemic, SkyFox had the task of designing a solution for quick testing software and hardware that would able to help experts of laboratories, by having a tool able to reunite all the data they need to deliver results to the patients.

Our goals

Each part of the project aimed to achieve its own goal to bring this tool to life:

* Vidiia web: Bring awareness about the new brand that will deliver this solution.
* VH6 App: Provide an innovative tool to manage the data and the process of the hardware, that was easy to use for the laboratories and took into account the existent conditions for their testing process.
* User web forms: Getting the key information in the most amiable way from the patients in need of a test.
* VH6 cloud: Manage the data of the results and give different insights about the use, results, patients, laboratories and operators.

  The challenge

  Under the environment of the pandemic everything had to be done remotely. This complicated the process because we had to make the extra effort of being completely aligned about where we were and where we aimed.

  We had to understand the user’s and the laboratories’ needs and how to interpret this to deliver a proper app design to make their task easier, whilst also considering the patients and how to deliver them the results.

  Given the nature of the project there was a lot of experimentation in this process, which is to be expected given the context of the timing of this project (June 2020).

  My role:

  Alongside being in charge of the branding creation, I had to keep everything visually consistent - I had to identify how to structure and simplify all the different processes of the project and interpret them to deliver the best and clearest path to communicate the possibilities to our stakeholders. This included clarifying the process of getting the results, and delivering results to the patients, as well as giving a tool that gave you a panoramic vision of the results across patients, locations and so on.

  The complexity of innovation:

  Giving the stressful context and the confusing way that this virus behaved and infected us, we needed to hear from experts how to manage everything in the safest way.

  Understanding the virus and how to join the different strategies to keep this project working was a huge part of it.

  There was a lot of back and forth where everything was in constant re-evaluation, deciding what steps needed to stay in our app and which ones to cut was indispensable to continuing this project - what was worth explaining in detail, what can be summed up and what can’t were constant questions. We also experienced a lot of time pressure because other solutions started to appear in the market.

  Discoveries

  One of the biggest discoveries that made us reconsider the path that we already had for the UI was that in early stages of the trials we found that a simple thing as using gloves complicated the entire interaction with the app.

  We came to this discovery at a very crucial stage when it was still possible to adjust everything, considering this particular aspect that made us change our entire UI. It was from this that I really learnt the important of getting the product into the hands of real users as early as possible - as everything was only in design it wasn’t too much work to change our designs, and the learnings were vital to our success. So at the end we have stages considering the use of gloves (specially the ones with liquids and the samples involved) and we have sections without the gloves when it turns to filling information or reporting.

  We also had to work on deciding what information about the actual chemical process that was occurring should be shown. I had to take into account a variety of factors - such as the users (both regular public users and scientists analysing results) and the various use cases, and decide when information should be prominently displayed and when it should be optionally available.

  Another important aspect was how to display issues - with the testing process, with the hardware, or errors caused by the user (eg someone adding samples to test). We aimed everything to work under the ideal situations, but we also had to include the right information for any user to be able to self resolve any issues.

  Delivering a result

  After brainstorming different ideas about how we were going to map the different alternatives through wireframes, I started to design the layouts (including mobile, tablet and desktop varieties), and once approved we shared this with the developers. I was always working closely with the developers to try and negotiate on certain decisions, and I was always open to listen their ideas, keeping in mind the greater good of the project and the timescales we were aiming for.

  In terms of software used, first we worked with moqups for the wireframes, then Sketch for the design of the layouts, and then Zeplin to share it with our developers. We also used InVision to share the designs with the stakeholders and some users to try it out and get a feel for the app from an early stage, as it is always quicker and easier to adjust designs at this stage.

  The first priority for the project was the website so we could try and gauge interest in the offering and engage with potential clients. After that came the VH6 app, the forms and at the end the admin and results interface. This allowed me a more organic way to integrate the actual visual design for the brand and start to add different aspects that helped to improve communication with the users.

VIDIIA

After the guidelines of the UK government were issued advising wider use of coronavirus tests, we created an AI solution for LFTs (Lateral Flow Test). First, it interprets the results, it detects duplicates of the test to avoid fake results, and it allows you to accumulate reports of your test to give a consistent report of the testing period.

Our goals

* An easy and accessible solution for companies who need to test their employees through LFTs constantly or to get a trustworthy result for getting services that need proof of a negative test.
* A design that was easy to blend with your brand.
* Simple and clear steps to facilitate the process of constant testing.

  The challenge

  This project started just as an exploration of a potential idea that we wanted to check the possibilities of, and then we started to add more and more ideas until we finished it.

  Everything started because one of our developers created the AI capable enough to give these results (but at the end was rejected by a previous client) and we already had the previous experience with Vidiia about how to deliver the results to the patients in general, so it was just natural to join forces to deliver try the full potential of this idea.

  Research, confirming and interpreting the guidelines of the UK government for traveling, checking the measures taken by some companies to handle the pandemic, or even just guidelines in case you have been exposed to someone who tested positive, you will have to report a certain number of negatives to leave isolation. Each of these examples gave us enough reasons to push this project forward.

  My role:

  Alongside being in charge of the branding creation for this project, my job was to design the user journey.

  Our priority was to keep the app simple to use - one of the references was the file sharing app WeTransfer, as it is focused around you using it within only a couple of clicks. So my work was to take learnings from them, define what elements we could repurpose ourselves and what to change in order to keep it simple, but also to adapt it to our purpose.

  A novelty on this project was that this time I was in charge of deciding what kind of content we needed for each section of the project.

  And the last part was the design, UI guidelines and illustrations of this web app.

  My usual route:

  The wireframes were the first step that we took due to the need for the developers to start almost immediately to show some potential investors that we had this project already working in terms of code.

  This was a first time for us as a team so we needed to adapt for this challenge. I started to have meetings with my manager and my developers in charge, all of us added different ideas to try to shield the project the best that we could to prevent mistakes (but there’s always surprises, it doesn’t matter how much you try to prevent it). So we started to research, define limitations, expectations and needs of this project. With everything aligned, I started to do the wireframes for the project so they could start to have a main idea of how it would work.

  Once the wireframe was completed, I started to design the screens to be as simple as possible. As this product would allow the possibility to blend with your brand, the guidelines needed to be very simple to allow this transition. My attention was therefore more focused this time on the experience and the interaction with the web app to get a better engagement with the users, starting from filling the forms, how to explain and simplify the requirements and finally the process to deliver the results.

  The last part was to create the branding for the project to enrich it visually, but obviously minding that the “look” of the project had to keep the essence of simplicity.

  Discoveries

  In the process of creating the content I discovered an opportunity for the business and I pitched the idea to the team. The idea was the proposition of different subscription tiers for the product. They truly liked it, but first we needed to get investors onboard to then offer the subscription tiers.

  The dynamic was:

  * Stage 1 Trial month where you can test your company and we will deliver the results and reports.
  * Stage 2 For constant users that don’t belong to a bigger company, and who are in need of frequent testing - they could access email reminders for the LFT test and receive the reports depending on the needs that they can modify.
  * Stage 3 For companies, we will give them the web app to blend it with their brand. They can also personalize the needs of testing of the company, along with the email reminders for the employees of the company and proper reports, alerts and statuses.

Delivering a result

The product is actually working and trying to get the attention of potential investors and users, for the same reason we have tried it internally with some testers that reported very minor problems that we have solved one by one.
